World's Top 10 Largest Shopping Malls 2008

The shopping mall construction boom in Asia has attracted a good deal of international media attention during the past few years. Eight of the ten largest malls in the world were in Asia particularly in China, Philippines and United Arab Emirates.

The 10 shopping largest shopping malls were rank based on the amount of "Gross Leasable Area" (GLA) - is the area of interior floor space leased for retail shops, services, dining and amusement such as night clubs, video arcades, skating rinks and cinemas.

Rankings are based on statistics from Eastern Connecticut State University, which compiles data from mall management companies on official press releases for the rest of the world.

Here's the list of the world's top 10 largest shopping malls 2008

1. South China Mall, Dongguan, China

Total Area: 9.6 million square feet
Stores: 1,500

This mall has seven modeled on international cities, nations and regions, including Amsterdam, Paris, Rome, Venice, Egypt, the Caribbean, and California.

2. Golden Resources Shopping Mall, Beijing, China

Gross Leasable Area: 6.0 million square feet
Total Area: 7.3 million square feet
Stores: 1,000+

Also known as the "Great Mall of China", this mega-mall has 6 floors and is located near the Fourth Ring Road, west of Beijing

3. SM Mall of Asia, Pasay City, Philippines

Gross Leasable Area: 4.2 million square feet
Total Area: 7.3 million square feet
Stores: 1,000+

The largest mall in the Philippines is four buildings connected by walkways. It features several cinemas and movie theaters such as IMAX, an ice skating rink, and Science Discovery Center.

4. Dubai Mall, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Total Area: 5.9 million square feet
Stores: 1,200

Part of a much larger upscale entertainment and lifestyle center featuring Gold Souk, the Olympic-sized Dubai Ice Rink, Fashion Catwalk atrium, KidZania, 22-screen Cineplex, and food court.

5. West Edmonton Mall, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

The largest shopping mall in Northern America featuring indoor wave pool (World Water pool), amusement areas, hotel, restaurants, and 20,000 parking spaces.

6. Cevahir Istanbul, Istanbul, Turkey

Currently the largest shopping mall in Europe, it has six floors, cinemas, roller coaster and theater.

7. SM City North Edsa Quezon City, Philippines

This is the first shopping mall in the Philippines, it has 5 floors, 12 digital movie theaters, and a 200 shop Cyberzone, IMAX theater planned to open in early 2009

8. SM Megamall Mandaluyong City, Philippines

SM Megamall is the largest shopping mall in the heart of Ortigas business district of Metro Manila, Philippines. It has a bowling center, ice skating rink, 12 movie theaters, conventions and functions. The bridge way connecting the two main building of the mall contains several restaurants.

9. Berjaya Time Square Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Total Area: 7.5 square feet
Stores: 1,000+

Berjaya Times Square icludes 45 restaurants, a theme park and 3D Digi IMAX theater.


10. Beijing Mall Beijing, China

Gross Leasable Area: 3.4 million square feet
Total Area: 4.7 square feet
Stores: 600

It has 4 levels of shopping with interior residences located near Fifth Ring Road at southeast of Beijing.
